Most parents shopping for a confirmation dress are doing it for the first time. Communion was years ago, your daughter was a different size and a different person, and the rules feel vaguer this time round. Here is what we have learned from helping families through it at our shop in Ancaster.

Start with what the parish expects, not what she likes

It sounds backwards, but it saves the heartbreak of falling for a dress that gets turned down. One phone call to the parish office answers it. Ask three things: is white required or just suggested, do shoulders need to be covered, and is there a hem length they expect.

Once you have those three answers, everything else is open, and she can choose freely inside them. Teenagers are far more willing to compromise when the limits come from the church rather than from you.

What suits a 12-year-old is not what suits a 16-year-old

This is the part parents underestimate. Confirmation covers a wide age range, and a dress that looks lovely on a girl who has just turned twelve can look like dressing-up on a girl of sixteen, and vice versa.

  • Around 11 to 12. Often still in the gap between children’s and junior sizing. A-line shapes with a defined waist are forgiving here, and a slightly longer hem gives room to grow into it.
  • Around 13 to 14. The age we are asked about most. Girls this age usually want simple: a plain bodice, a fuller skirt, nothing that reads as little-girl. Lace tends to be the sticking point. If she dislikes it, do not fight it.
  • Around 15 to 16. Closer to a junior or adult cut. Sheath and fit-and-flare shapes work well, and a dress chosen at this age usually earns a second outing at graduation or a family wedding.

The sleeve question

More dresses get rejected over sleeves than anything else. Cap sleeves, short sleeves and three-quarter sleeves are safe nearly everywhere. If she has set her heart on something sleeveless, a bolero or shrug usually resolves it, and it can come off afterwards for photos and the meal.

Timing: later than you think

Parents often shop months ahead, which feels responsible and frequently backfires. Girls this age change size quickly. Four to six weeks before the date is the sweet spot: close enough that the fit still holds, early enough for alterations.

If you want to look earlier for the choice, that is fine. Just plan on a fitting closer to the day.

Bring the shoes

Hem length depends entirely on the shoes, so bring the actual pair she will wear, or buy them first. A low heel or a flat in white, ivory or a neutral tone is the usual choice. She will be standing, walking up for the sacrament and then in photographs for an hour. Comfort beats height every time.

What about her communion dress?

Usually not an option, and not only because of size. Communion dresses are cut for a younger child and tend to be more decorated than a parish wants for confirmation. The sacraments call for different things: communion leans white and ceremonial, confirmation leans plain and grown-up.

Veils, hair and jewellery

Veils belong to first communion and are rarely worn for confirmation. A small hair accessory is the usual substitute, if anything at all. Keep jewellery simple. Many girls wear a cross or a saint’s medal, often a gift from a godparent, and that is usually the only piece needed.

A short checklist

  • Call the parish about colour, sleeves and hem
  • Shop four to six weeks before the date
  • Bring the shoes to the fitting
  • Leave time for alterations, and measure rather than guess a size
  • Decide early whether a bolero is needed
  • Let her have the final say inside the parish’s rules

Come and try a few on

Fabric weight, how a skirt moves and how a neckline sits are things you cannot judge from a photograph. We would rather you came in and tried several.
